When you are looking for a small SUV, Hyundai has the Kona. This SUV is comfortable and cozy, with all the features you would expect to see in a larger SUV. It's a very affordable option for most people wanting to drive a less expensive and smaller SUV.

Trim Levels

Hyundai loves to offer customers lots of choices. While you can't quite pack as much into a smaller SUV as you can a full-size SUV, you can still get enough extras to create four trim levels. The Kona's four trim levels are:

  • SE: The base model that includes your choice of nine exterior colors and a 12.3-inch touchscreen display
  • SEL: 18-inch metal alloy wheels (bigger wheels than the base model), roof side rails, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • N Line: A sporty model inspired by racecars and has fewer exterior colors but offers three two-tone exterior color schemes, plus 19-inch metal alloy wheels and a power tilt-n-slide sunroof
  • Limited: Surround view monitor and blind spot view monitor, plus a  turbocharged engine

Additional packages and options are offered but not included unless requested on the SEL and up.

 

Performance

The SE and SEL share the 2.0-liter MPI Atkinson four-cylinder engine with 132 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. The N-Line and Limited have an upgraded engine with the 1.6-liter turbo-GDI four-cylinder engine, offering 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. This is not an automatic transmission vehicle, regardless of which engine and trim level you choose.

 

Interior

Every Kona has room for five passengers. A power 8-way seat for SEL and above (6-way manual seat for front passenger and driver in the SE) and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. In the SEL and above, you get navigation included with the touchscreen. The 60/40 rear split seats let you fold down part or all of the back seats for extra cargo space. Dynamic Voice Recognition is standard on SEL and above, although you can get it on the SE with the add-on Convenience package for New York, NY drivers.

 

Exterior

Each trim level gets bigger and bigger wheels. Unique to the Kona is the LED Projector lights, which shine very bright but use very little energy. Black roof rails are available as standard on all trim levels except SE. The N-Line has many unique exterior and interior features exclusive to this trim level.

 

Technology

Hyundai refers to its onboard technology package as SmartSense. The tech crosses over into safety with its forward collision avoidance, pedestrian and cyclist detection, emergency braking, lane keeping and lane following assist, highway driving assist, parking proximity warnings, safe exit warning, driver attention warning, and more. The tech and safety features combined in this SUV make it worth the price and double its value.

 

Safety

Bodyside reinforcement in the new Hyundai Kona means that a side hit from another vehicle is disbursed throughout the stronger frame. It prevents the frame of this smaller SUV from crumpling in an accident. The immobilizer stops thieves from taking your Kona when they try to break into it and hotwire it to steal. Front and side airbags keep passengers safe in case of an accident.
